"In the great whole of a reality in action, nothing remains unchanged. Immobility is an appearance, a power grab that is immediately swept away by the constant becoming of everything."

Dehors est blanc is the new project of the young dance company Tumbleweed, founded in 2017 by Swiss choreographer and dancer Angela Rabaglio and French choreographer, dancer and musician Micaël Florents. Their collaboration began in 2014, fuelled by the meeting of two very different artistic paths. A constant dialogue inspired by their travels, science, nature and philosophy, as well as a permanent physical, technical and artistic curiosity, shapes their individual understanding of movement, the body and its language.

The Gyre
(duo, 2018) their first production, an enchanting duet in which these common interests come together in an abstract language of form: travel and hiking, science and nature. After two years of touring with this first project, they are starting two new choreographic projects in 2020: A Very Eye (6 dancers, 2022) and Dehors est blanc (trio, creation 2023). A very Eye could be seen as The Gyre Extended, it is based on similar principles but extended to a crew of six dancers. How do you create a perpetuum mobile, how do you preserve energy in changing constellations?

Dehors est blanc
is a different matter. It literally pulls the ground from under our feet. While the first two performances start from stable standing positions, the starting point for Dehors est blanc is suspended bodies from an ingenious system of supports connected to cables and counterweights that allow them to transcend gravity. The three bodies literally float in space and enter into different spatial and rhythmic relationships with each other, like musical instruments in a jazz band.
The title Dehors est blanc is a reference to the "white-out", an atmospheric optical phenomenon in which the contrasts are nil and where everything seems enveloped in a uniform white glow. The observer can then discern neither the shadows nor the horizon, causing a loss of the sense of depth and orientation.

“Aerial virtuosity and hazy poetry for a suspended trio, Dehors est blanc is an invitation to let go and breathe. (…) The infinitesimal as evidence, gentleness as immense force and sublimated reality. This is what Tumbleweed distils in a show that allows time to settle in, to express itself, to make us see a thousand things and more, (…) A marginal performance of masterful poetry”

Isabelle Plumhans – Focus Le Vif, 02.11.2023
